Cyclone Giovanna - Madagascar

24 Feb 2012

AL-IMDAAD FOUNDATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COORPERATION BRINGS RELIEF TO THE VICTIMS OF THE CYCLONES IN MADAGASCAR In an attempt to assist the island nation of Madagascar to recover from the devastation caused by the recent cyclones Giovanna and Irina, the Al-Imdaad Foundation together with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, handed over aid to victims of the cyclones which affected over 300,000 people and left over 100 dead. Within 24 hours of the request made to the Al-Imdaad Foundation by Department of International relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), a consignment of emergency relief supplies which included tents, food, blankets and water purification tablets was ready to be loaded at the Lanseria International Airport on a Boeing 767 sponsored by the South African Government. The Al-Imdaad team worked late into the night loading cargo onto the aircraft and to ensure that the flight was ready to take off early the next morning (13 March 2012) as scheduled. Our Emergency relief teams, accompanied by the Deputy Minister Mr Fransman landed at the Antananarivo Military Base where we were received by the Government of Madagascar and the army. Immediately our cargo was despatched to one the most affected areas of the cyclone, Brickaville, which is located on the east coast of Madagascar. The South African Deputy Minister of DIRCO and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar personally distributed blankets and food alongside the Al-Imdaad Foundation to the victims of cyclones who showed much appreciation. The Al-Imdaad Foundation emergency relief teams, escorted by the Malagasy Armed Forces, continued on a six-hour long, treacherous journey to the eastern coast of Madagascar where the intensity of the cyclone was felt the most. Houses were flattened, hospitals were damaged and even the most basic medical facilities and medicines were scarce due to the intense damage. Makeshift tents were being used to provide primary health care services to the people in need. Even the education sector was disrupted as classrooms and schools had been destroyed. Some of the tents provided by the Al-Imdaad Foundation were being used as classrooms in order to bring back a sense of normalcy in the affected communities of Brickaville. Food packages, water purification tablets and blankets were also distributed to the affected people on Moramanga, a town utterly devastated by the passage of the cyclone. Our teams then headed back to the capital, Antananarivo where a press conference was held and where the Al-Imdaad Foundation was applauded by the South African Deputy Minister of DIRCO. As common with every major disaster, once the dust has settled and the media has shifted its focus, the Al-Imdaad Foundation remains steadfast in its endeavours to redevelop communities affected by the disaster. With this in mind, the Al-Imdaad Foundation, as part of our long term development strategy has undertaken the responsibility of rebuilding the lives of the Malagasy people. Alhamdulillah, this project has been a successful one and our heartfelt gratitude goes out to you, our donors, SA Airlink, Proudly South African and Laser Logistics for their valuable contribution, and to the South African Government for their active role and unstinting support, effort and assistance that they have provided to the Al-Imdaad Foundation in bringing relief to the Malagasy people. We look forward to your continued support in the future.
