The DR Congo was recently identified as the location of the world’s largest hunger crisis with the largest number of people facing food insecurity. There are 27.3 million highly food-insecure people across 26 provinces of the DRC and some 5.2 million people displaced by the simmering conflict. Despite the vast size and immense potential for a sustainable food supply, the DRC does not produce enough food and relies heavily on expensive imports to meet the needs of its population. A nutritious diet is also unaffordable for half the population due to the high cost of nutritious foods and low food availability in certain areas. The situation is the worst in rural areas where 65% of households are estimated to be unable to afford a nutritious diet.
The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Office in the DR Congo is located in the conflict scarred South Kivu region and is well poised to assist communities affected by protracted food insecurity.
