Tropical Storm Eloise made landfall in Mozambique in the early hours of January 23rd, 20km south of the Beira City in Sofala Province. It brought winds of 140km/h with gusts of over 160km/h and widespread rainfall in many districts in Sofala including 250mm in Beira City in 24h. As of 31 January, 300,00 people were affected, and 20,000 were displaced. Over 26,000 houses and shelters were damaged, or completely destroyed. Flooded areas in the Zambezi, Pungue and Buzi river basins  caused 37 road cuts and an area of over 142,000 croplands has been lost.
