The Al-Imdaad Foundation (AIF) responded swiftly with aid for the victims of a massive fire in the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban which broke out on Sunday, 4 July 2010. Two people lost their lives and more than 2000 others were left homeless.
On Monday, July 5 2010, the AIF team and KZN MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube conducted a ceremonial handover of food hampers at the Kennedy Road Hall. AIF then entered joint discussions with the KZN Disaster Management, the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, eThekwini Municipality and Councillor Yacoob Baig about assistance needed for the affected residents. Food aid was identified as one of the main priorities.
On Wednesday, July 7 2010, the AIF team distributed 500 food hampers to Kennedy Road residents. AIF also sponsored 1 meal a day from July 8 - 16 for the hungry. In partnership with the Minara Chamber of Commerce and with volunteers from Baitul Nur, AIF sponsored breakfast on July 8.
As a local NGO, Al-Imdaad Foundation strives to provide aid to victims of natural and man-made disasters around South Africa. We have provided funding for temporary shelters, blankets, and food for residents whose homes were destroyed by fires in Durban (Foreman Road, 2008) and Johannesburg (Alexandra township, 2009 and 2010).
