Blankets for Homeless flood victims
06 Jun 2017Due to the intensive storms and flooding in Cape Town on Wednesday June 7th 2017, many shelters were inundated with homeless people seeking shelter from the storm. Al-Imdaad Foundation teams mobilised to distribute additional blankets to shelters which were allowing homeless people to sleep on floors due to limited space.
Up to 10 000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes after intensive winds brought about what is being called the worst urban fire in recent memory in the Western Cape. The fire affected parts of the Southern Cape in Knysna and surrounding areas. The fire came on the back of what has been called the worst storm in 30 years in Cape Town which caused havoc on Wednesday June 7th 2017, ripping roofs off buildings and leading to widespread flooding in low-lying areas. Several thousand people were affected by the storm and had to be accommodated at emergency shelters.
Al-Imdaad Foundation responded to the needs of victims of the storm and fire in partnership with #OperationSA. Our teams distributed blankets and hygiene packs to flood displaced families in Cape Town and Knysna.
Our teams continue to be on standby in the event of any future disasters.
