Alexandra Fire Disaster / Winter Warmth Relief
More than 450 squatters were left homeless when their shacks were razed to the ground after a fire broke out in the Alexandra township in Johannesburg on June 18 2010. They lost most of their possessions and had no other means of shelter during the bitterly cold winter month. The Al-Imdaad Foundation liased with the SA Disaster Management to provide immediate aid to the victims. After conducting an assessment of the disaster with the local authorities and those affected, AIF distributed food packages, blankets, hats and gloves. The victims were grateful for the assistance, saying that all they had left were the clothes on their back. AIF has responded with emergency aid during the outbreaks of previous fires in Alexandra. The Foundation received a letter of thanks from local government for its assistance.
