Soweto is the oldest urban settlement or 'township' in South Africa, southwest of Johannesburg; with a population of approximately 1.3 million. It has been estimated that 40% of Johannesburg's residents live in Soweto. Johannesburg’s cold, arid and dry winters can be extremely harsh, especially on those who do not have the resources to protect themselves from the winter. As part of the winter warmth campaign, senior citizens of the area were targeted. These elderly citizens of ours were furnished with blankets to provide them with warmth and comfort during the fast approaching season of winter.

The bitterly cold winter season in South Africa is especially daunting for the poor and underprivileged who cannot afford to keep warm during these months. The Al-Imdaad Foundation's annual Winter Warmth campaign aims to assist these communities by providing quality winter wear to help them brave the cold winter months. The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Winter Warmth campaign has become one of the most comprehensive winter campaigns in the country. Spread across all nine provinces, it seeks to address the needs of the most vulnerable people including the destitute, homeless and the increasing number of refugees that populate the country today. Many of these people live in shacks and informal housing which offers little insulation against the cold, exposing them to icy winds and chills that can cause illnesses especially amongst children. The Al-Imdaad Foundation reaches out to these communities with blankets and winter accessories including gloves and warm hats that help make the winter months more bearable. The Al-Imdaad Foundation blankets are of the finest quality and far exceed the minimum standards and specifications laid out by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC). They are distributed to tens of thousands each year targeting the most vulnerable communities in each province. Hoping to build upon a successful legacy of Winter Warmth campaigns in the past, the Al-Imdaad Foundation has kicked off its 2015 campaign early to allow maximum time for distributions. As part of the campaign, special focus will be given to targeting deep rural areas where people often have no access to basic services such as electricity, water and sewage disposal and where the winter months are consequently a great burden. While many of us meet the winter months with thick layers of clothing, spending nights in centrally heated houses in front of the latest model of heater, multitudes in our own country, without adequate bedding, struggle to get a few hours’ sleep as they shiver through the night. Such inadequate protection against the cold can lead to illnesses, colds and flu which are often especially dangerous for the large proportion of the population suffering from HIV and AIDS. Providing warm blankets to these people can help them avoid illnesses and save lives. As we enjoy our warm drinks and huddle around our heaters this coming winter, let us all spare a thought for those in a far less comfortable situation. Support the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Operation Winter Warmth campaign by sponsoring a blanket for just R50 and help prepare the people of South Africa so that the winter ahead is more tolerable than those that have passed before.
