Mamelodi Flood Disaster (PRETORIA)
Al-Imdaad provides food aid to the victims of the Phomolong freak floods
13 Sep 2012The Al-Imdaad Foundation represented by Qari Ziyad Patel, responded to the crisis by distributing up to 700 food aid packs to the needy victims who had lost their homes. Many of these victims now lived in temporary relocation centres without their own belongings or supplies. The food packs would allow them to support their families and make up for the lost nutrition in the intervening period.
On 20 August 2012 a burst water pipe caused freak floods in the Phomolong Informal settlement east of Mamelodi in Pretoria. Two children were killed and up to 800 residents had to be evacuated. Several shacks that had been built on top of the pipe, which runs just a few metres under the ground, were completely destroyed by the floods. The force of the water was so strong that eye-witnesses described how shack had been flung into the air. Many victims lost everything and had to be accommodated at local churches, schools and the Stanza Bopape community hall with the injured victims admitted to Mamelodi and De Aar Hospitals.
