"Apart from witnessing the destruction caused by the floods, the team also witnessed the poor and sordid living conditions of the people of these areas."

AIF comes to the aid of the Windy City after flash floods The recent dynamic weather systems passing over South Africa have resulted in the City of Port Elizabeth experiencing heavy rainfall. It is quite an unusual occurrence for The Windy City to experience excessive rainfall during the winter season and this resulted in the flooding of many of the low lying areas in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (Port Elizabeth) region. This caused many families to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in nearby community centres. AIF jointly with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality officials inspected and assessed the flood affected areas and witnessed firsthand the destruction caused by the flooding. The team were met by flood victims trying to salvage what little they could whilst engaged in cleaning up their homes. In areas such as New Brighton, homes were still underwater. Apart from witnessing the destruction caused by the floods, the team also witnessed the poor and sordid living conditions of the people of these areas. After a thorough assessment, AIF mobilised its resources and facilitated much needed relief aid to the affected communities. AIF distributed hot meals, warm blankets and high-valued food hampers to the flood victims. The initial aid comprised of hot meals with over 2000 cups of soup prepared on the first night alone. Being extremely cold and windy it was indeed a heart wrenching experience to witness the old and frail at these community centres and their gratitude was plain to see. The AIF delivered relief aid to victims in the following areas: KWA LANGA ,NGXANZULA VILLAGE (MANDELA VILLAGE), WALMER, NEW BRIGHTON (CHRIS HANI INFORMAL SETTLEMENT), KWAZAKELA, SALT LAKE, and MISSIONVALE. All flood recipients were identified and registered. Only those affected by the floods were entitled to the relief aid.
