The Islamic Educational Centre (IEC), in collaboration with the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) Ladysmith, hosted a breast cancer awareness campaign on Saturday, October 15.

Ladies of the community attended in support of the campaign. The programme consisted of a presentation by Nusrat Kader, a chiropractor, who enlightened the audience on cancer and chiropractics. Two local cancer survivors also shared their journey. The guest speaker for the day was Linda Meissner, a clinical psychologist who highlighted the psycho-social aspects of cancer. The afternoon ended with tea and free breast screening conducted by Matron Shah Begum Mathadeen and local ultra-sonographer Khadija Patel. In the Uitvaal area, 60km outside Ladysmith, the local branch of the IMA conducted an outreach programme the following day focusing on eyes, dental and medical. The volunteer team was greeted by 130 people on arrival at 9am. Numbers then swelled to over 300 patients. It was an extremely hot day and part of the programme was to give the waiting patients bottled water. This programme – which was held in association with Operation Sukuma Sakhe, the Al-Imdaad Foundation and the IEC – proved extremely popular in an area where no medical services exist. Local councillor Mr Nkabinde and the educators of the hosting school, Emahlekwane Primary, are to be congratulated on their efforts in providing the necessary infrastructure and sacrificing their time to make the event a success.
