"It is indeed a heartfelt sight to see so many men, women and children disorientated and stateless," said AIF spokesperson, Qari Ziyaad Patel"

As the political turmoil continues in Libya, the Al Imdaad Foundation (AIF) reports that the humanitarian crisis has reached alarming proportions. With the colaition forces now adding to the turmoil with strikes that began in the last week, thousands of refugees contine to flee to the borders with Tunisia and Egypt with little or no belongings. "It is indeed a heartfelt sight to see so many men, women and children disorientated and stateless," said AIF spokesperson, Qari Ziyaad Patel, adding that it was the plight of these refugees that prompted the international humanitarian community to respond. AIF has now posted a humanitarian team to the Choucha Relief Camp in Tunisia which is a stones throw from the border crossing of Ras Ajdir, as seen here. "Our base at the Choucha Camp has become the beacon of hope for many refugees. The AIF base is within a sea of tents housing thousands of refugees at this camp. The team has left no stone unturned in flying the South African flag high and establishing a proudly South African presence at the Choucha Refugee Camp," Patel said He explained that AIF team is providing relief aid and humanitarian services to the thousands of needy victims at this refugee camp. The team has been providing hot meals timeously for the refugees. In addition to nutritious hot meals, clean water, juice, fresh milk, high protein biscuits, fresh bread, hygiene packs etc. have been made available for the refugees. The team will monitor the situation closely and remain on hand to continue its humanitarian operations at the Choucha Refugee Camp. "Simultaneously, AIF has a humanitarian team in Sallum, the Egyptian-Libyan border assisting refugees fleeing the intense fighting in Benghazi. This holistic humanitarian approach by the AIF and its presence on the eastern and western borders of Libya will certainly impact the state of the thousands of fleeing refugees positively and completely," Patel said. AIF has a close working relationship with the United Nations and its various affiliated institutions. The organization also features on the database of the UN NGO Branch, which allows it to be kept up to date with the dynamic humanitarian situation in Libya constantly.
