Local NGOs and volunteers have been working around the clock to ensure that those left homeless after the weekend's heavy rains don't go hungry.

They have teamed up with local government officials and police to help families living in areas such as Chatsworth and Umlazi whose homes were damaged or flooded. The Al-Imdaad Foundation says it'll continue to help feed about 150 people now living in community halls. ''We have been sweating walking up these mountains and these rural settings are no easy place to be in, but we had to give out mattresses, blankets and of course we are now helping out in these community halls with supper for all the victims in the five or six halls. "Thereafter we will sit with the Metro and with Disaster Management and see how more the foundation can assist these families," he said. eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo inspected several flood-affected areas yesterday.
