Dams have long run dry in Ilembe District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, the municipal coffers have also run dry, it no longer has money to supply water from tanks and about R340 million is needed to sustain the project. The Stanger area is one of the worst affected by the on-going drought. It was among the first to start rationing water for its 250 thousand households. R128 million has been spent on water infrastructure in the last 2 years. This includes tankers to deliver water to communities. However, funds have run out, leaving residents like 29-year old Silindile Mthembu without water supply. Mthembu says, “It is going to be difficult. We are now going to be forced to take grant money and hire cars to go elsewhere to buy water.” The municipality has applied for financial relief. Mayor of the Ilembe District Municipality, Welcome Mdabe says, “We are able to supply them at least once every three days. Meaning therefore that if we supply water in a particular ward it will take us three days to return to that ward, that is a challenge.” Recent rains have not helped and for now people like Mthembu may have to settle for water supply once a week.
