Below average rainfall and dry, hot weather resulted in a crippling drought across many areas of South Africa. Even with rainfall in 2016 and early 2017, many dams remain far below capacity. Nationally the drought situation affected millions of households especially in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the North West.
