Storm Disaster - Weenen

24 Feb 2012

In recent weeks, Estcourt and surrounding areas have experienced a high number of electrical and thunderstorms in particular. Apart from bringing much needed rain, these storms also have within them the power of destruction. On the 22nd of February 2012, one such storm struck ward 7 on the outskirts of Weenen, bringing with it lashing wind and rain causing flooding as well as massive damage to houses in the area. Twenty seven homes were affected by the storm, at least 5 having their roofs completely blown away with the rest being completely flooded by the downpour. Being one of the poorest wards in the area, the people in ward 7 were in desperate need of assistance. Having received a request from Mr Tim Jeebodh, on behalf of the Uthukela District Municipality, The Al Imdaad Foundation responded by providing high value food hampers for all the families affected by the storm. These hampers consisted of 16 items including mielie meal, samp, rice, potatoes, sugar beans, canned food and flour. The distribution took place on the 25th of February at the Weenen Town Hall. All the beneficiaries were verified according to a list provided by the Uthukela District Municipality. Councillor Themba Dubazane of Weenen was also present at the distribution.
