NEW DELHI: The Centre feels that both Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya were inadequately prepared to deal with the recent floods, though largely because they had not faced floods for a long time.

Minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, while addressing a function to mark the NDMA foundation day here on Monday, said the helplessness of J&K administration in dealing with the floods was evident from its response. "Preparation level was not up to the mark. I am not trying to blame the state government. But this is the position as Jammu and Kashmir has not faced floods for many decades," he said. Rijiju added that this was the case with Meghalaya as well. "Meghalaya was not prepared for floods. Response of the state government was not adequate as Meghalaya has not faced floods for many years," he said. The MoS said since Assam has been facing regular floods, the response of the state government in terms of rescue and relief was quick. Stating that both the Centre and state government have to deal with natural disasters as a team, Rijiju said a lot more needed to be done to improve disaster preparedness.
