Operation Winter Warmth 2010 Kicks Off!

With the cold and wet weather descending onto South Africa, thousands will once again be left to suffer through the cold, some even left homeless. The Al Imdaad Foundation (AIF) will be doing its part to assist those affected by the winter conditions, said project co-ordinator, Qari Ziyaad Patel, referring to their Operation Winter Warmth. This project will saw blanket vouchers being handed out in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Social Welfare a few weeks ago as a start. "We are looking at warming hearts and people in an informal settlement area in Midrand in Johannesburg, it is one of the poorest areas in the country. This year we decided to start in the northern part of Gauteng, we will move across to other provinces as well. Last year we distributed over 30,000 blankets throughout South Africa." The AIF, now in its eighth year, remains relatively independent from partnering with other organisations. However, they do form alliances with communities and radio stations throughout the country as well as regular donors contributing to the cause, Patel said, adding that they also have other extensive projects, which have been implemented over the years. "We have bursary funds which assist those less fortunate, and we also provide aid to widows and orphans. This year we will be distributing quality blankets at a donation cost of R60, a new initiative of warm hats and gloves is being planned and we will be distributing hot meals at certain points," Patel explained. He urged those who are willing to contribute to the distribution drive to get involved or to find out more about their project. "Among others, we will be distributing Durood and Sunnah Kitaabs," he related. More details on this campaign and how to receive a Kitaab, contact the Al Imdaad office on 086 1786 243 or visit www.alimdaad.com.
